Have you ever had something that you absolutely had to get done, but were procrastinating on for days, weeks, or even months? Unless you are superhuman, you probably struggle with procrastination quite a bit. About 85% of people aren’t motivated to do anything except the average stuff we are all expected to do, and the other 15% constantly struggles with peaks and valleys of motivation and laziness.
Today, I want to share with my readers a little trick that you can use to quickly boost your motivation and get yourself to buckledown and start working. It uses the power of the mind to (almost) instantly and effortlessly help you to move yourself to action. It works like a charm; I used it to get myself to write this very article.
MOLDING YOUR MIND
Motivation is a complex thing; everyone is motivated by different things, and often it is difficult to find what motivates you long term, rather than a quick jolt of motivation that quickly fades.
One thing that stands true for all of us, though, is that our brains all work in fundamentally the same way, and we can use the basic mechanics of our minds to our advantage if we use certain proven methods.
The quick , easy trick for guaranteed motivation that I have promised you is based on the principle of using the times when your brain is most impressionable to program your mind to force your body to take action.
You see, many studies have shown that your brain is most impressionable, and most easily retains information, visualizations, and affirmations during the time shortly before we go to sleep, and shortly after we awaken. These same studies have also shown that the commands that you give yourself and the thoughts that you choose to hold before you go to sleep will be internalized by your sub-conscious mind during your slumber. This is a very powerful piece of knowledge that we can use to our advantage in our daily lives.
THE MAGIC METHOD
If you would like to motivate yourself to take action in any area of your life, with any task, you must simply use the twin forces of visualization and affirmation for just five short minutes directly before you go to sleep at night, and first thing in the morning when you wake up.
First, choose the task that you would like to get completed the next day. Then, as you lie in bed, right before going to sleep, visualize yourself performing that task the next day. See yourself completing it quickly and effortlessly.
Over and over again for several minutes, continue to see yourself working diligently at your chosen task, and make sure to see yourself enjoying the work you are doing. I have found that the best way to do this is to picture yourself smiling as you do your work.
After several minutes of visualization, you will begin to become more comfortable with the thought of you doing the work. You will feel a shift in your mind of going from wanting to avoid the task to actually wanting to go and do it immediately. This is when you will know that you are successfully programming your sub-conscious mind.
All the while that you are visualizing yourself being the diligent worker that you would like to be, repeat a chosen affirmation that is also geared towards helping you to be productive and motivated. Simply repeat to yourself several times, ” I will do (whatever your task is) tomorrow. I will do (whatever) tomorrow.” Say it over and over again, drilling it into your sub-conscious during it’s most impressionable time of the day.
Continue to alternate between picturing yourself taking action and affirming to yourself that you will take action. This in itself takes discipline to do, because most people do not like to daydream about work. But if you have the discipline to do this for only a few short minutes before you go to sleep at night, several little ’miracles of the mind’ will happen.
First, your mind will take hold of these thoughts, internalize them while you sleep, and eventually believe them to be true. Your subconscious mind will shift from a place of not wanting to do the task to actually believing that you do want to do the task. It will begin to associate pleasure, rather than pain, with accomplishing the task.
Secondly, you will create the expectation in your mind that you are absolutely going to accomplish what you want the next day. Expectation precedes action, and makes it that much more real to you.
When you wake up in the morning, you will immediately see the evidence that your mental programming from the night before has worked. Very often, your very first thought in the morning will be the very last thought that you had the night before; the thought of you working at and accomplishing your chosen task.
Because you immediately begin thinking of accomplishing the task when you awaken, this makes it very easy to continue your mental programming. For just a few short minutes before you get out of bed, imagine yourself accomplishing your goal. Visualize yourself happily working away. Repeat to yourself that you will get this done today. Affirm your intention over and over, until you are so ready to work that you spring out of bed, full of energy and anticipation of your success.
Effortless Motivation
That’s it. This is one of the most effective exercises that you can ever do to motivate yourself to action. I will personally guarantee that you will feel a huge shift in your thinking and motivation if you follow these simple steps. The amazing thing about this trick is that it will make you begin to work effortlessly. Rather than having to force yourself to get working, it will seem as if an inner force is causing you to start your work without any effort on your part. Often, after doing this exercise, the next day I will literally just pick up the task that I have been procrastinating on for weeks, and get it accomplished quickly and easily, with no further motivation needed on my part. It is as if my brain is just naturally geared towards doing it, and so yours will be, too, when you begin to use this powerful tool.
Now that you know this incredible method for getting motivated, put it into action immediately. Instead of struggling to get yourself to work, get your mind to do the motivating for you by programming your brain for success. Tonight and tomorrow morning, follow the easy steps I have outlined, see how well it works, and then come back to ConradHees.com and share your experience with our great community of readers in the comments section. Hopefully, we can all inspire each other to accomplish more with our lives.

Good suggestion. I do something similar, but rather than actually focus hard on visualizing what I want to do, whenever I think of it, I just go “Yeah, that shouldn’t be too hard,” and dismiss it to where the inconsequential stuff in my mind goes. The result? More often than not when I sit down to do it, I find the effort inconsequential.

Hey thanks alot for the comment Joshua!
It is funny that you mention this tip, because it is definitely very true. I realized just recently that I was making too big of a deal out of my work, and it would make me not want to do it. Once I just rationalized it in my head and then started doing it, it came very easily.
Thanks again for adding some good value to this post!

Hi Conrad
Great post - and very well written!
You’ve explained the technique really well and I’m going to try it myself. In a way, I have been trying it out a few times (but in a different way), and it does definitely work.
The new bit of information for me though is that I could combine my visualization with the positive affirmation of doing the work. So, that’s a cool trick I will apply from now on.
I would however modify the affirmation step slightly. Instead of saying it in the future tense (as in “I will do it tomorrow…”) I think you might get even better results if you say it in the present tense as if you are already doing it (as in “I am writing my new post to my blog effortlessly and successfully…”)
What I’ve come to learn, is that the sub-conscious is outside the limits of space since it consists essentially of non-matter, and is therefore also outside the limits of time (I’m sure you know that space and time kinda needs each other).
Or perhaps even better said, the sub-conscious mind does not have a conception of time, and only operates in the ever now and eternal present time. Therefore, when you repeat your affirmation using your conscious mind, it would make more sense to use the tense that your sub-conscious mind already operates in.
Read Thomas Troward’s The Dore Lecture On Mental Science if what I’ve written does not make any sense - he explains it much better than I ever could!

That is a very valid observation, Gideon!
I know exactly what you are talking about with saying affirmations in the present tense…I just avoided it (although maybe I shouldn’t have) because I really did not want to get into an explanation about the concept of time, which many people do not understand or care for. But you are definitely right, especially when visualizing, repeating affirmations in the present tense has a much more profound effect. That way, your visualizations and affirmations are congruent.
Your comment took care of the explanation for me though! Thanks alot for adding that valuable point to this post! Glad you enjoyed the article, and hope to see you around here some more, Gideon!

I have trouble going to bed on time and sleeping. Will this work for me? I try this method time I go to sleep and wake up. Of course since I have trouble sleeping I try to do this before I go to sleep and then just fall asleep just after a minute or 2 of this method. I’ve only tried this 2 days so far.
